For if, when we were God's enemies . . .

"If / Then" statements are cool beans - when they fall to your favor.

For example: IF when "A" was true (& "A" was bad) good things happened; THEN how much more when "B" is true (& "B' is a good thing) will better things happen?

Track with the INCREDIBLE "if / then'" below from Romans:

For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! ~ Romans 5:10 (NIV) ~

WOW! If for His enemies (us) God sent His Son to die for us to start a relationship - while we were sinners, no less (vs. 8) - how much more will He do for family?

If He rescued, reconciled & loved you as a loser, How much more will He protected and provide for you as His child?

What an "If / then" THAT is!No: what a Great God HE IS!

So, when you blow it again today, confess it & draw near knowing His love is not diminished. If He will die for enemies to make them friends, how freely will He forgive & restore His loved ones?

Teach those young bucks

"Titus, I want you to teach,"says Paul in his letter to his young protege.

"I want you to teach the *Older Men* "this"

& the *Older Women* "that"

& the *Younger Women* & Slaves "the other" " (okay, its a rough summary of Titus 2:1-10).

Wait: what about the *Younger Men*?

What does Paul point Titus to in his teaching of the young bucks?

"Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled.In everything set them an example by doing what is good." ~ Titus 2:6, 7 - NIV ~

Have things changed that much?Young men need to learn to get their passions under control &they need someone to be an example, to SHOW them what's good.

Teach temperance, Paul says, remind them of restraint, stress self-control.And set a good example of doing good deeds by doing good. They need some one to demonstrate it, not just tell them.

Have any young men in your life? Here are two ways you can powerfully & practically serve them:Urge them to control their urges, to master their mojoand show them the morally good life by living it in front of them.

That's enough godly busyness to keep them & us off the streets.

The Child - 2010 Christmas Eve Message

*My notes from our Christmas Eve Service**Kerry*

“The Child”The Humanity of the Christ, Jesus, Immanuel Dec. 24- 2010 –GBC

Jesus is given so many wonderful names in ScriptureThe Lion, Lamb, Living Water, Bread of life, Alpha & Omega…

In just the Christmas story alone we encounter:

- The Christ, the Messiah, the Anointed One - Jesus which speaks of Him being a savior: Jehovah saves - The wonderful description of Him as Immanuel – God with us

Truly He has & is “The Names above all names”

Tonight I want us to look at another name, title, description for Jesus:

- One that would be easy to miss - One that speaks of His humanity, Humility - & His helplessness – yes helplessness

*That name / title? “The Child”*

Read Matt. 1:18-2:23 - listen for “the child”

*In Christ* we learn of His being the Anointed One, the one Israel waitedfor

*In Jesus* we’re told of His being the savior / deliverer – His people fromsins

*In Immanuel*, we learn of His divinity & nearness / presence - God w/ us

*In “the Child”* we are reminded of His humanity, His humility, helplessness* **Child: paidia* (GK) used 10 X in Matt. 2 - 9 Xof JesusIt refers to a baby, infant, a young child

Jesus is a child – yes *The* Child - but also *A* childIs there anything more human or helpless than a child?Vulnerable, Needy, Dependent

Over & over Matthew calls Jesus “the child”Could have called Him Jesus – for that is who He wasBut, “the child” is who He was too.

Powerless Socially insignificantUnskilled UnproductiveDependent Helpless

*This Child –* like any other child– needed nurturing (Luke 2:52), protecting, sheltering

This Child – the King of the world – needed rescuing from an evil ruler

This Child - who saves us from our evil– needed his daddy to save him from an evil king

He was threatened & was powerless to do anything about itHe needed his daddy to listen to God, to obey GodHe needed the tender care of His mom

He needed a nation to be a refugee ina nation to go home toa community to be raised in

When the Word became flesh, the Almighty became a fertilized egg

Nine months before they had no room in the Inn,He needed to find a place in the womb,to implant to grow, to develop, to mature

The 2nd Person of Trinity had to go thru 3 Trimesters of development

The Hand that formed woman from Adam’s rib,now pushed out on those ribs as she swelled in pregnancy

She was, as the KJV says, “great with child”the child - a child – Jesus, the Christ, Immanuel

What wonder & joyous anticipation there is in expecting a child

*We wonder: *Is it a boy, a girl … is there just one or are there two or more?if he / she will have 10 fingers / toes? What skills will he have? What charms will she develop?

*He was a child:*One who lays away in a mangerA baby that breaks the silent night with His cryHe wet, soiled diapers, He risked skin rash & had to cut teethHe made Himself totally dependent, totally human

In Jesus, humanity is a mark of humilityWe lose sight of that

We have so humanized God and deified manthat we lose sight of this remarkable condescension

To *con-descend* – to come down w/

We often think in terms of someone belittling othersYet – it is a wonderful word

It is Attitude that is keyOne may condescend and not be condescendingOr one may be condescending without truly condescending

Yes, Jesus is *A* child,*but* He is also *“The Child”** *

Note that the 5 X when He & Mary are mentioned togetherIt is “The child & His mother” - *note the order* (11, 13, 14, 20, 21)

The Carol / Hymn asks it well: “What child is this…?This, this is Christ the Lord…the babe, the son of Mary”

Not just a child - This is *THE* ChildGod and man joined up in an infantWhat HumilitySharing our Humanity

I recently saw some *knock-off perfumes* and colognesFor $2, I could buy imitation Polo, Obsession and othersIt was not the real thing, but it smelled just like itIt even said so on the label“This product had nothing to do with Polo”

*How unlike Jesus*He was not a cheap imitation of humanityHe was in all ways like us – except for the stench of our sinHe had everything to do with usHe got tired, could be tempted, hungered, got thirsty, lonely, sleepy

*Heb. 2:14-18* “Since the children have flesh and blood,he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy himwho holds the power of death--that is, the devil--15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear ofdeath. …

17 For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way,in order that he might become a mercifuland faithful high priest in service to God,and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted,he is able to help those who are being tempted.”

He was THE child - but he was A Child too– fully human minus sin

And through His humanity & humility· He can fully relate to us:our needs, our plight, our hurts, our weaknesses· He is a sympathetic God· He has “Been there done that”

*Heb. 4:14* “Therefore, since we have a great high priestwho has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God,let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.

15 For we do not have a high priest who is unableto sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin.16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence,so that we may receive mercyand find grace to help us in our time of need.” NIV

· He can relate· He can feel your pain· He can help· He was The Child

That is the marvel of ChristmasDeity invades humanityTakes on full humanityWith its helplessness & humility

So He can be for us what we most needA high priest & sacrificeWho loves us & can relate to all we go through

The Christ - Our Savior Jesus - Emmanuelon Christmas - He is a child - The Child

*O come let us adore Him! *
